Business of Sports Network To Report on More Sports, More Often

Business of Sports Network

For those that visit The Biz of Baseball, you have most likely noticed the links and images to other sites in the Business of Sports Network. Those sites (The Biz of Basketball, The Biz of Football, and The Biz of Hockey), along with The Biz of Baseball cover a broad spectrum of professional sports in the U.S. and Canada, but it’s only a portion of the key news happening outside the lines.

To that end, BusinessofSportsNetwork.com will shift from simply being a portal of RSS feeds, and contact info for Bizball LLC, but instead will begin to cover all aspects of sports business. From auto racing to golf to MLS to MMA to tennis and beyond, BusinessofSportsNetwork.com will be expanding. We’ll also be highlighting key aspects from the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL via our “Focus On” series highlighting research and stories on our “Biz” sites.

Lastly, I have shifted my personal blog into a more traditional platform, with link dumps being done daily to a variety of mainstream and alternative platforms across the internet.

I hope you will swing by these two new resources, see the changes, (a first glimpse is The Influence of Tiger Woods Return on the Business of Sports Network, as well as links to key stories on maurybrown.com), and make them part of your daily stop for sports news off the playing surface.

Site Update: End of Year MLB Player Payroll (2002-2008)

End of Year payrollsEach year, the 30 clubs in Major League Baseball begin with an Opening Day payroll, based on the 25-man roster, and end the year with a final payroll figure based on the 40-man roster. The details of these figures are always something highly sought after, even though The Associated Press publishes them annually.

To assist researchers, The Biz of Baseball has now been updated with this information for 2008-2002.

Well, sort of. We will be updating 2004 as soon as that information is made available to The Biz of Baseball.

The data is available in PDF, and will be accessible going forward from the "Trade, Arb, and Salary Info" section to the lower left of our navigation teir (see Final Player Payrolls)

All figures originally published by The Associated Press. Final payrolls for the 30 major league teams from 2008-2002 (Currently, 2004 is missing from the data. Updating shortly), according to information received by clubs from the commissioner's office. Figures are for 40-man rosters and include salaries and prorated shares of signing bonuses, earned incentive bonuses, non-cash compensation, buyouts of unexercised options and cash transactions. In some cases, parts of salaries that are deferred are discounted to reflect present-day values.

The Biz of Baseball Wants YouThe Biz of Baseball is looking to add two members to their staff.

We are looking for volunteer blogger that is available throughout each day to file short posts detailing MLB transactions such as free agent signings, trades, contract extensions, DFAs, etc.

We are also seeking someone available throughout the day to file short injury reports.

Below is an example of the format that these individuals would file under:

Braves Sign Garrett Anderson to 1-Year Deal

After missing out on Ken Griffey, Jr., the Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that free agent outfielder Garrett Anderson has signed a 1-year deal with the Braves reported to be worth $2.5 million.

Anderson hit .293 with 15 home runs, 84 RBIs and a .325 on-base percentage last season, including 14 home runs in 433 at-bats against right-handed pitchers. He has spent his entire 15-year career with the Angels.

Interested applicants need to be available for postings throughout each day (weekends optional). Some experience with using blogging tools preferred.

If interested, please contact Maury Brown with the Business of Sports Network

Super Bowl XLIII - LIVE BLOG

THIS IS A BUSINESS OF SPORTS NETWORK UPDATE...

The Super Bowl is more than a football game, it's an event. To that end, the Business of Sports Network is covering all the details for Super Bowl XLIII through The Biz of Football.

On Super Bowl Sunday, I'll be blogging the event live. From rating the broadcasting team, to television ads, to halftime, right through the post-game interviews, we'lll have the festivities covered.

Leading up to Sunday, look for injury reports, and other stories, such as news on advertisers for Sunday's game, as well as tidbits on how America spends on food and drink on Super Bowl Sunday (see From Chips to Beer to Music, Super Bowl Makes Cash Registers Ring). Here's an excerpt:

Consumers purchased nearly 52 million cases of beer during the two-week period surrounding the 2008 Super Bowl. The 4th of July tops the list of beer consuming day of the year at a staggering (literally) 68,318,493 cases sold.

All that beer means that there’s an abundance of snacks to go around, as well. More snack food is sold on Super Bowl Sunday than any day of the year. The second highest snack selling day? The Saturday before the big game.

Snack sales in U.S. food, drug, and mass merchandiser stores (including Walmart) are expected to reach $595 million during the two weeks surrounding Super Bowl Sunday.

While Potato Chips enjoyed the largest dollar and volume sales during the Super Bowl period, Tortilla Chips generated the largest incremental gains with $20.7 million and 8.3 million pounds above average sales figures. But what’s a chip without a good dip? Dip Mixes (+38% vs. two-week average) and Canned Dips (+24.5%) saw the biggest percent surge in sales compared to other snacks for the Super Bowl.

Other stories include:

Remember, check in early Sunday as The Biz of Football covers the Super Bowl all day long.

MiLBWhile one can go to ESPN or a host of other sites to get information on attendance in Major League Baseball, sources for Minor League Baseball have been close to non-existent.

With assistance from MiLB, The Biz of Baseball now offers an attendance database with data dating back to 2005.

Searches can be done by Year, Team, Class, League, and Division. Queries returned display total and average attendance for each team in returned data as well as total gates and openings lost due to weather for a given year.

Select the link below to access:

Site Update: MLB Salary Arbitration Figures, Updated Filings
User Rating: / 21

Written by Maury Brown

Prince Fielder

While Ryan Howard is asking for
the most in salary arbitration ($18M),
Prince Fielder will see the biggest raise
from last year in this year's salary
arbitration class.

It started with 111 players filing for salary arbitration last Thursday. Now, there are 45 players left that have yet to reach agreement, and have now exchanged salary figures (Note: Melky Cabrera had figures exchanged but reached a 1-year, $1.4 million deal with the Yankees just after figures were released. Nick Markakis has reportedly reached a 6-year, $61.1 million deal, but it has not been announced).

The Biz of Baseball has now been updated with this new data, and can be viewed on our Salary Arbitration Figures page.

Here are some notes of interest, regarding the salary arbitration and the figures exchanged:

  • Ryan Howard is seeking the biggest payday. His $18 million figure is the highest of all the players, and by a considerable sum -- $10 million. Prince Fielder is a distant second at $8 million.
  • Howard sees the largest gap between player and club figures with the Brewers offering $14 million, or a gap of $4 million.
  • Fielder, however, will be the player with the largest raise, even if the club figure (the lower of the two) is selected. He will see a raise of $5,330,000 from his 2008 salary of $670,000, should the club figure be reached. Howard is second at $4 million.
  • The player that has the most to lose in salary arbitration appears to be veteran reliever David Weathers. The Reds offered $3 million, or $300,000 less than Weather made last season.
  • The smallest gap between club and player figure goes to third baseman Willy Aybar of the Tampa Bay Rays ($150,000).
  • In a sign that the players in salary arbitration will all be happy (Weathers the possible exception), if the stars aligned for the owners and all players were to accept the club figures, they would collectively see a raise of 44 percent from their 2008 salaries.
  • Of the 111 players that filed for salary arbitration, 42 of them reached 1-year agreements (see Salary Arbitration Filings tracker).
  • For 66 players that reached contracts over the last 6 days, the average salary for 2009 is just  over $2.4 million ($2,412,064).
  • Of those players, starting pitcher Erik Bedard of the Mariners reached the highest 2009 salary figure ($7,750,000), followed by the Pirates’ Adam LaRoche ($7.5 million), and Xavier Nady of the Yankees ($6.55 million).
  • Of the 66 players that have reached agreement, five have been multi-year (Nick Markakis, 6-years – Kevin Youkilis, 4-years – Cole Hamels, Ryan Madson, 3 years – Greg Dobbs, 2 years).

The Salary Arbitration Figures page includes player name, service time, team, position 2008 salary, player figure, club figure, and "resolution" – either contract agreement reached between the player and club, or arbitration ruling.

The Salary Arbitration Filings page will be updated concurrently with the Salary Arbitration Figures page to allow you to track contract details for all 111 that filed on January 15.

Site Update: Hall of Fame Voting Details

Biz of Baseball

Each year, debates rage as to who should or should not be on the Hall of Fame ballot, and who is deserving of inclusion.

It also outlines the votes themselves, the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA), and trends in the voting process (i.e. will players in the "steroid era" eventually make headway with some of the voting members).

With the addition of Rickey Henderson and Jim Rice, there are now 106 players in the HOF. Using information provided by The Associated Press, and research into the vote tallys, The Biz of Baseball has now been updated with a table outlining the percentage of votes for each player inducted, as well as the vote count for all players selected by BBWAA members for that given ballot year (currently, details are back to 2007, but are being updated regularly).

The link to the Hall of Fame Voting page is available in the navigation tier to the left under"Resources". You will also find a BBWAA "badge list" dated from last year (does not include new members for 2009, which includes Rob Neyer and Keith Law from ESPN, as well as Will Carroll and Christina Karhl from Baseball Prospectus).

How did Henderson and Rice fare compared to their HOF brethren?

Henderson received 511 votes of the 539 ballots case, or 94.81% of the total, ranking him 13th, all-time. Rice received 412 votes from the 539 cast, or 76.44%, ranking him 96th of the 106 inductees. The next three that missed the requisite percentage of votes included Andre Dawson (361 votes, or 67%), Bert Blyleven (338 votes, or 62.7%), and Lee Smith (240 votes, or 44.5%).
