Maury Brown Interview Featured on USA Today Online
Written by the Staff
Friday, 08 May 2009 14:48

USA Today Sports WeeklyWhile a small portion of an interview with Stephen Borelli of USA Today runs on page 11 of this week’s edition of USA Today Sports Weekly, the entire interview runs today via USA Today’s website on their MLB page. The article entitled, Bloggin' baseball: Keeping up with baseball as a business goes into how BizofBaseball.com was started, Brown’s background, and some of his thoughts on the state of the game. Here are some excerpts:

Before launching the site, what was your baseball background?

In 2001 I was extremely fortunate to work with former Indiana Pacers General Manager, David Kahn on the key documents that would become a submission to Major League Baseball for the relocation of the Montreal Expos. Portland, of course, did not get the team, but it allowed for an extensive analysis on the market to see if MLB would work there. I also was the co-chair of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) Business of Baseball committee and a columnist for both The Hardball Times and Baseball Prospectus before focusing heavily on The Biz of Baseball.

When did you come up with the idea for your site and how and when did it launch?

The idea was really an extension of some of the work that I had been doing for SABR. I had created a site dedicated primarily for researchers, but for the most part, when the word "business" is attached to most anything, it causes the average person's eyes to glaze over –sports economics is beyond boring. The concept we have is simple: sports is influenced as much by what happens off the field as what happens on it; help fans understand that. The site launched in September of 2006 and traffic, and media interest in what we are doing has tripled in just the last year, alone. The site is much like a house that never has enough rooms – we keep building on to it.

You have attracted prominent front-office executives, baseball journalists and industry insiders for interviews on your site. How have you been able to build such an impressive array of them?

To tell the truth, I've been exceptionally fortunate and lucky. For every interview published there have been two or three that never transpired. Being naïve, I simply felt that if I was asking decent questions, the platform to publish the answers on (internet only) would not matter. Each interview published has worked as a sort of business card for approaching the next interview subject. Landing Bob Costas very early on opened a lot of doors, as did interviews with former commissioners Vincent and Kuhn through SABR. I've been told pigs will fly before Commissioner Selig will do an interview with me, but I look forward to the day that might happen. I find him the most compelling figure in all of sports given how he's turned the game around.

In what condition do you see the game amid our economic crisis?

As solid as any industry can be in these trying times. If not for the incredible growth in revenues over the last 5 to 6 years, and changes that allow them to be more equally distributed across all the clubs, I wonder whether some teams would have survived a recession of this magnitude.

What's the worst thing that could happen to baseball?

Labor unrest. Strikes or lockouts. When the CBA was up for renewal in 2002, it came against the backdrop of 9/11. Between that, and the '94 strike, I believe the owners and players realized that fans had just about had enough of the bickering. Relations are a bit more strained than they have been over the last two rounds of collective bargaining, but hopefully both sides understand how important it is to keep the game moving forward.

What's the best?

That one day the World Series is as popular as the Super Bowl. They're very different animals, so I'm not holding my breath. Other than that, maybe that the Pirates or Royals win a World Series before too long. When that happens, it would be hard for anyone to say that there is no parity in baseball.

Business of Sports Network - Autism Awareness Challenge
User Rating: / 16

Written by Maury Brown

Autism

At midnight tonight, the calendar sheds another page, and April turns to May. With that ends what has been designated as World Autism Awareness Month.

But, for millions of families around the globe, autism awareness is a daily affair.

I, and my family, are but one of a growing number that deals with autism’s effects.

Last year, when my wife and I learned that our youngest son Travis had been diagnosed as being on the autism scale as “classic”, I reached out to the sports community and offered up a challenge:

Spread the word. Help parents with young children look for the signs of autism. Be aware of your surroundings and realize that the boy or girl next to you in the checkout line may be on the autism scale. After all, it is a growing developmental disorder.

This year, I hope you will do the same. If you are involved in sports media, I encourage you to write about the Business of Sports Network Autism Challenge. If you are a producer in radio, I hope you will give me 5 minutes on the air to help spread the word. If you are an athlete, a sports executive, or a sports organization, I hope you will extend a hand.

We chose to offer up this challenge on the last day of World Autism Awareness Month in the hopes that while the designation drops from the calendar, it does not drop from view, and that no matter the date on the calendar, you help make society just a bit better by simply acknowledging the ever growing presence of this developmental disorder.

Our challenge is to make others aware of autism. The following information comes by way of the Autism Society of America:

  • 1 out of 150 children in U.S.
  • 1 out of 90 boys
  • Affects four times as many boys as girls
  • Lifetime cost of caring for a child with autism: $3.5 to $5 million
  • Current annual cost to U.S.: $35 billion
  • Estimated annual cost by 2010: $90 billion
  • 1.5 million Americans affected

Researching has found information that has been valuable to my wife and I, and some indications that we saw early on as classic traits of autism spectrum disorder within our son’s behavior. Passing some of these behavioral traits along may help you, or someone you know, get their child to their pediatrician for an evaluation. Early detection is critical as the earlier a child is enrolled in therapy, the better the odds are that when they grow older they will be able to function in society.

Here are some signs to look for in the children in your life:

  • Lack of or delay in spoken language
  • Repetitive use of language and/or motor mannerisms (e.g., hand-flapping, twirling objects)
  • Little or no eye contact
  • Lack of interest in peer relationships
  • Lack of spontaneous or make-believe play
  • Persistent fixation on parts of objects
  • Reaching a development milestone only to see regressively disappear
  • Odd dietary behaviors, such as eating only starches
  • No fear of danger

If your child is diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum, we highly suggest reading the “100 Day Kit” available on Autism Speaks,. The 81 page PDF is an indispensable walk through everything from the emotions that parents go through when they receive word that their child has ASD, how autism is diagnosed, the variety of symptoms of autism, how the extended family and siblings are impacted and much more.

How can you help? Donate. Spread the word.

As mentioned, autism reaches across all spectrums of society. This month, a new series of public service advertisements (PSAs) featuring professional golfer Ernie Els, and his six year old son, Ben, designed to raise awareness about autism and to urge parents to learn the early warning signs of this developmental disorder was released. See the video below for details.

Finally, autism is simply a name. It does not define those that have the disorder. Here is the face of a child that has autism, but is instead simply called “Travis”.

Travis Brown. Diagnosed as
being on the autism scale,

Twitter No, it was not due to Demi Moore saving someone’s life, or Oprah, or Shaq. It’s just that, well, it’s a great way to get info fast.

Being more than fashionably late to the dance, I have begun to track the Business of Sports Network through Twitter. But, as many of you know that use the social network phenomenon, it’s a great way to do far more.

So, while I’ll be covering sports and business, and all the other stuff outside the lines, who knows what else I will be Tweeting?

Thanks to the assistance of a dedicated group, you can now find all nationally broadcast MLB games from one location.

Through the use of 30Boxes.com, this MLB calendar provides the national broadcast partner, along with times and game match-ups.

The calendar will be updated regularly as schedules are released later into the season (currently, information for most of April and May has been provided).

This calendar is too handy just have it in this announcement, so we have created a permanent location from our “Media News” navigation set to the left. Simply click on National Broadcast Calendar throughout the course of the season to check games.

Select the image below to see the national broadcast schedule for Major League Baseball. These games are carried on the following networks:

  • FOX
  • ESPN
  • TBS
  • MLB Network

Dates may not be available for certain months of the season due to scheduling by the networks. Look for updates as they become available.

MLB Schedule

Click to view schedule in pop-up.
Note that may be prompted for an application to view this content.
The option of "30 Boxes" should be provided as an option if viewing in Firefox

Special thanks to Janine for making this available to The Biz of Baseball

Site Update: End of Year MLB Player Payroll Updated with 2004 Data

Written by Maury Brown
Friday, 13 March 2009 12:55

End of Year payrollsLate last month, The Biz of Baseball provided end of year salary information for each of the 30 clubs in MLB from 2002-2008, with the data for 2004 missing at the time. That data is now available, and the document has been updated.

The data is available in PDF, and will be accessible going forward from the "Trade, Arb, and Salary Info" section to the lower left of our navigation tier.

(see Final Player Payrolls)

All figures originally published by The Associated Press. Final payrolls for the 30 major league teams from 2008-2002, according to information received by clubs from the commissioner's office. Figures are for 40-man rosters and include salaries and prorated shares of signing bonuses, earned incentive bonuses, non-cash compensation, buyouts of unexercised options and cash transactions. In some cases, parts of salaries that are deferred are discounted to reflect present-day values.
