Cubs Beat Ryan Theriot in Final Salary Arbitration Case of 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Ryan TheriotThe book is now officially closed on MLB salary arbitration in 2010. The Cubs won their case with shortstop Ryan Theriot, and with it, he will earn $2.6 million as opposed to his asking figure of $3.4 million. It was the Cubs first salary arbitration hearing since 1993 when they beat Mark Grace (see the PDF in our salary arbitration scorecard for details).

Theriot went .284/.343/.369 last season with 38 RBIs, 7 HRs, and 171 hits in 154 games and 677 plate appearances last season.

The Cubs have now won 4 out of 6 cases heard since 1974 when salary arbitration was put in place (a 67 percent winning percentage). They had reached settlements with 36 salary arbitration eligible players between the span of the Grace and Theriot hearings (see the salary arbitration hearing tracker by club dating to 1974).

There were eight salary arbitration hearings, matching 2008 for the second most cases heard since 2001 when there were fourteen.  This year clubs won 5 cases (Theriot, Wandy Rodriguez, B.J. Upton, Brian Bruney, and Sean Burnett) with players taking three (Cody Ross, Jeff Mathis, and Corey Hart). Dating back to 1974, the clubs have now beat the players 285 to 210 in salary arbitration hearings, a 57.6 winning percentage.
