Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) announced today that Tim Maxey has been named the sport’s Joint Strength and Conditioning Coordinator, that the league and the players union say “whose duties will focus on providing guidance to and identifying best practices for Clubs and Players on issues involving conditioning, fitness, nutrition and other related subjects.”
Maxey, who completed his seventh season as Major League Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Cleveland Indians in 2009, will be a resource to Major League Club staff and Players in all areas pertaining to strength and conditioning, including the development of educational programs and assisting with the establishment of industry-wide initiatives. He will visit each Club during 2010 Spring Training.
In addition, Maxey has served MLB and the MLBPA on its Strength and Conditioning Advisory Board.
Addition Works to Avoid Accidental PED Positives
A key aspect in the selection of Maxey surrounds league and union efforts to avoid players accidentally coming up positive for PEDs through nutritional supplements being laced with banned substances due to poor quality control. Players such as J.C. Romero, Sergio Mitre, and David Ortiz have come up positive for PEDs, based on unintentionally ingesting then through laced nutritional supplements. Maxey was instrumental in assisting the commissioner's office and the union in developing the certification program to create a list of nutritional supplements that are deemed to be “safe” through Ann Arbor based NSF International (for more on NSF, see The Biz of Baseball interview with Edward Wyszumiala). Maxey was an advisor to the Taylor Hooton Foundation, which works toward “educating America's youth about the dangers of Performance Enhancing Drugs.”
High ranking officials within MLB and the MLBPA cite Maxey as an additional resource for clubs and players on matters including nutrition and supplements, and that he will not enforce or counsel on matters related to the Joint Drug Agreement, which falls under the prevue of the Independent Program Administrator. That position is currently held by Bryan W. Smith, M.D., Ph.D
Prior to working for the Indians, Maxey was a part of the Kansas City Royals organization from 1998-2002, the last four as Strength and Conditioning Coordinator for the Major League Club.
Maxey is a National Strength and Conditioning Association-Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach. The Ohio native is a graduate of Shawnee State University and holds a Master’s Degree in physical education from The Ohio State University.
