Example of 2009 Arb Report

An example of The Biz of Baseball's
extensive report on MLB salary arbitration.

On Friday of last week, salary arbitration in MLB ended when Ryan Zimmerman of the Nationals reached a one-year, $3.325 million contract agreement. At the time, we reported on some “vital stats” on this year’s salary arbitration class, including the fact that salaries for the 111 players rose 143 percent from last season, mid-point agreements were up significantly from the year prior, and that the players beat the owners in salary arbitration hearings for the first time since 1996.

But, that was only a sliver of the details.

The Biz of Baseball is now publishing a 25 page report detailing each of the contracts for the 111 players that filed for salary arbitration this year. The report is broken down as follows:

  • By team
  • By position
  • Details for each Super Two
  • Details for each first time salary arbitration player
  • Details for each of the 15 multi-year contracts
  • Details for the three salary arbitration hearings, including the arbitrators on the panels.
  • A timeline charting when each contract was reached.

Do you ever sleep, Maury? How long have you been working on this info? When is some team going to get wise and hire you? Simply fantastic stuff.

Nice comprehensive report - except you left out a whole team. No matter - the Tribe is likely to make any headlines this year.

Indians Missing for a Reason
written by Maury Brown, November 13, 2009
If you look at the report in the initial notes, the Indians are missing because they were the only club last year to have no players in salary arbitration.

I expect it will be the same this year. They're very proud of the fact that they reach agreements in advance of salary arbitration year in and year out.
