UPDATE: On Tues. 2/24/09, the A's ceased efforts to relocate to Fremont. Managing owner Lewis Wolff issued the following statement: "After much consideration, today we informed Mayor Wasserman and City Council members that the Oakland Athletics will cease efforts to relocate our franchise to the City of Fremont. "I expressed my regrets and gratitude, especially to those people who shared our vision and spent endless hours in support of our proposal. However, it became increasingly clear that our ballpark project faced significant delays ahead and I could not, in good conscience, continue to lead our team down this path. "My focus now is on baseball with Spring Training and the opening of the 2009 season. I am extremely excited about the team's prospects this year. "My goal and desire for the organization is to determine a way to keep the team in Northern California. This goal has not changed."
The following are design concepts by 360 Architecture/Gensler Architecture for Cisco Field, a new Athletics ballpark facility to be built in Fremont, CA. (Details from Cisco Systems can be viewed here ) Click on each of the below thumbnail images to view in higher resolution. - Tenant: Athletics (club to be renamed shortly to reflect relocation. - Seating capacity: 30,000-34,000 baseball only facility (would be smallest in MLB)
- Surface: Grass
- Roof: None
- Estimated Facility Cost: Between $400-$500 million USD, excluding land costs (infrastructure costs not yet released).
- Seat Options: According to the A's, Cisco Field will be designed with multiple seating "neighborhoods," including field level box seats, 66 four-person mini-suites, lower reserved seats, 41 16-person suites, rooftop box seats, outfield seats, outfield rooftop, decks, clubs and restaurant seats.
- Suite Options: Cisco Field will have a variety of suite and premium seating options, including the intimate four-person mini-suites, which will be located just 15 rows from the playing field, 16-person suites cantilevered over the lower reserved seating with access to shared club spaces; party suites available for single games as loge boxes; and terrace viewing tables with access to premium clubs.
- Location: The 143-acre parcel in Fremont, known as "Pacific Commons", is located on the west side of Interstate 880 off the Auto Mall Parkway.
- Naming Rights - The A's and Cisco Systems, have agreed to a 30-year naming rights deal on the park (terms undisclosed at this time). Name of facility to be named Cisco Field.
- Funding Method: Lewis Wolff would like to do a large mix of retail and office space and 3,000 units of housing to form a "Ballpark Village" around the baseball stadium to offset the total cost of the facility.
- Other points of interest: The outfield concourses will be public streets that will close shortly before game time, similar to Yawkey Way outside of Fenway Park. These areas will have numerous fan amenities and interactive opportunities, along with food vendors, access to clubs and restaurants and a continuous view of the playing field.
- Projected Groundbreaking: The A's believe that the facility will be open 24-36 months after groundbreaking if state and local govenment coorporate. It is the intent of the A's and Cisco to begin groundbreaking on the ballpark as soon as possible, pending permits and approval.
